The Sundance Film Festival deals keep coming. Gunpowder & Sky has made one for low-seven figures for The Little Hours. Written and directed by Life After Beth helmer Jeff Baena, the film revolves around a young servant fleeing from his master who takes refuge at a dysfunctional convent in medieval Tuscany. Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon star.

GUNPOWDER & SKY CONTINUES EXPANSION, ACQUIRES SUPERGRAVITY

Gunpowder & Sky has acquired Supergravity Pictures. The deal comes after G&S made a strategic investment in the film and TV studio in July 2015 to create an equity financing and co-production relationship on film projects. The tie-up now will look to produce, market and distribute series and films directly to global audiences.

What does a global studio for the digital age look like? According to Floris Bauer, co-founder and President of Gunpowder & Sky, it looks quite a lot like a Hollywood studio — owning production, marketing, and distribution. And so, G&S has acquired FilmBuff, a global distributor helmed by Janet Brown, to serve as its distribution division aptly “Gunpowder & Sky Distribution.”

David Harris, formerly vice president of development at MTV’s digital-focused arm, MTV(other), will be vice president of development. Meerkat’s Laura Prangley will join him on the development as director. Ryan Nugent, formerly global head of creator trends and research, will be the new VP of content strategy. Lotte van der Veer will be G&S’ business development manager.

It’s been just under a month since Otter Media, the co-venture between AT&T and The Chernin Group, announced the formation of Gunpowder and Sky (G&S), a new digital studio headed by Viacom’s Van Toffler and Otter’s Floris Bauer. And now the subsidiary has made its first investment in short-form video production shingle “Cut”, the company’s Series A. Comcast Ventures has also invested in the round, which is said to help “Cut” scale production and expansion to other platforms.

Van Toffler, a creative force at MTV and Viacom for nearly three decades, is funneling his energy into producing content for the digital-first generation. Toffler, former CEO of Viacom Media Networks Music Group, has teamed with Floris Bauer, previously global head of strategy at Endemol, and Otter Media — the digital joint venture between Peter Chernin’s Chernin Group and AT&T — to form Gunpowder & Sky, a studio focused on cutting-edge entertainment for millennial audiences.
